KYF in Kitui: Advancing Disability Rights and Inclusion
On 16th April 2026, the Kenya Youth Federation (KYF) participated in a three-day training on Disability Rights and Inclusion in Kitui County under the Vinjana Twawenza Program. The engagement, held at the Full Gospel Churches of Kenya, was represented by our Deputy Secretary for Persons with Disabilities, Julius Nzioki.
The training provided a valuable platform for learning and dialogue around disability rights, inclusion, and community empowerment. Participants explored key legal and policy frameworks such as the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), the African Disability Protocol, and Kenya’s Persons with Disabilities Act (2025). There was also a strong focus on the role of United Disabled Persons of Kenya (UDPK) in advocating for and supporting persons with disabilities across the country.
One of the most notable observations during the training was the transformation in participant engagement. While many initially showed hesitation and low confidence, the interactive nature of the sessions gradually encouraged openness, participation, and self-expression. This highlighted the importance of creating safe and inclusive spaces where persons with disabilities can freely engage and contribute.
Despite the progress made, the training also brought to light several challenges faced by persons with disabilities, including:
1.Social isolation and discrimination
2.Limited awareness of disability rights
3.Inadequate access to education, employment, and public infrastructure
4.Negative societal attitudes and stigma
5.Vulnerability to abuse and exclusion
These realities emphasize the urgent need for continuous awareness, advocacy, and structured empowerment initiatives.
KYF’s Commitment and Way Forward
As a national youth organization, KYF remains committed to promoting inclusion and protecting the rights of persons with disabilities. Following this engagement, KYF is exploring opportunities to collaborate and potentially partner with United Disabled Persons of Kenya (UDPK) to strengthen outreach, advocacy, and empowerment programs across Kenya.
