Justice for Abigael: A Call to End the Silence and the Violence

In the quiet of Kasarani-Mwiki, a young girl’s light was brutally extinguished, Abigael, a young girl full of promise, was raped and murdered in a horrifying act that has shaken our hearts and rattled the core of our communities. Her only fault? Being a girl in a world that is still struggling to protect her.

Kenya Youth Federation (KYF), through its National Women Whip Joyce Nganga- Shasha, stood with the grieving family and the shocked community. Raised in Mwiki herself, Shasha knew this was not just another headline, it was personal. Abigael’s mother, a humble smokie vendor, faced not only the loss of her daughter but the burden of pursuing justice in a system that often moves too slowly, too silently.

When KYF released its press statement condemning the heinous act and demanding immediate action, it was not just a cry for justice, it was a plea for accountability from our leaders, our law enforcers, and from society itself.

Thanks to that public outcry, the Nairobi Woman Representative Hon. Esther Passaris personally visited the family to console and support. Even before her trip to Embu that morning, she made time to stand with Abigael’s mother, a move that reminded us all of the power of leadership with empathy.

Our Women Whip, Joyce Nganga, also reached out to the Principal Secretary for Gender, who responded swiftly. In their brief exchange, the PS expressed her alarm at the growing cases of gender-based violence and pledged to intensify national awareness. She welcomed further collaboration with KYF, recognizing our critical role in reaching the grassroots and restoring hope through mentorship, counselling, and youth empowerment.

Through KYF, we not only call for justice, we create the structures to prevent such tragedies. Through counselling programs, safe spaces, youth mentorship, and community training, we are standing in the gap where too many girls have been failed.

Abigael’s name must not be forgotten. Her story is a mirror of a broken system, but also a rallying call for change. We continue to stand with her family. We continue to demand accountability. And we continue to fight to ensure no girl has to live in fear or die in silence.

We thank every leader and citizen who has stepped forward. But our work is far from over.

  1. Let us turn our pain into purpose. Let justice for Abigael be the start of a national movement that says, “enough.”

For Abigael. For every girl.
